Dr. Garcia-Moral received a MD degree from the
University of Buenos Aires Medical School in 1961. He completed his
residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia which
was followed by a Hand Surgery Fellowship at the University of Colorado
Medical Center. He obtained his Board certification in Orthopedic
Surgery in 1971 and the Certificate for Added Qualifications in Surgery
of the Hand from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1989. He
served as an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico in
1972-75 as well as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery in Bernalillo County
Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He established the first hand surgery center in the
State of Oklahoma in 1979 and has served as Chairman of the Department
of Orthopedics at the HCA Columbia Presbyterian Hospital as well as
being Chairman of the Division of Hand Surgery at Integris Baptist
Medical Center. He was appointed as an Independent Medical Examiner for
the Workers' Compensation Court of the State of Oklahoma. He is a member
and honorary member of numerous professional societies and has received
many awards and recognitions.
In 1971, he was distinguished as the Carl Berg Fellow
having the opportunity to tour a variety of European centers of hand and
orthopedic surgery. He was awarded Best Layout and
Presentation at the 47th Annual Meeting of the American Society for
Surgery of the Hand. In 1984, he was a part of the American Delegation
to China with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand presenting
papers at the Academy of Science and Technology in Shanghai, China. He
returned to China in 1985 as a part of the American Delegation to China
for the American Occupational Medical Association where he presented
talks and discussions on cumulative trauma disorders of the upper
extremity. He speaks Spanish fluently.
He has presented more than 90 papers on both the
national and international level relating to surgery of the hand. His
most recent contribution is a Chapter on the Hand and Wrist in Care
of the Young Athlete which is the only sports medicine book geared
to the unique development and sports issues of children 5-18 years of
age. This was written jointly by the American Academy of Orthopedic
Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics and was published in
2000.
His special interests include osteoarthritis of the
thumb, peripheral nerve entrapments, nerve injuries, cumulative trauma
disorders, joint replacement in the hand, traumatic amputation and
prosthetics in addition to congenital birth defects.
On January 1, 2008, Carlos A. Garcia-Moral, MD retired from the
Center and is no longer seeing patients.
