Dr. Yocum received an MD degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas
Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1968 and did his
internship in Spokane, Washington. His orthopedic residency was
completed at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. After
completing his Hand Fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he
went to serve as the consultant orthopedic surgeon in the US Army in
West Germany from 1978-1981.
Through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, he became Board
Certified in Orthopedic Surgery in 1974 and also holds a Certificate of
Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. He is an active member of numerous
professional societies, including the American Society for Surgery of
the Hand and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has served
on the Board of Councilors and the Professional Liability Committee of
the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. Throughout his career, he
has presented papers on the local and national level pertaining to
surgery of the hand.
Dr. Yocum has extensive knowledge and experience in the Workers'
Compensation field and has served on many professional committees. He
has been appointed as an Independent Medical Examiner for the Workers
Compensation Court for the State of Oklahoma. Prior to joining the
Oklahoma Hand Surgery Center in 1998, he was in private solo practice in
Denver, Colorado. While in Denver he worked with the Colorado State
Division of Labor to assist in the development of guidelines for the
management of cumulative trauma disorder. He taught classes on
impairment ratings for the State of Colorado.
Dr. Yocum served 26 years in the United States Army Reserve of which
11 years were on active duty. He retired with the rank of Colonel after
the Gulf War in 1992.
As Clinical Instructor in Orthopedic Hand Surgery at the University
of Oklahoma Sciences Center, Dr. Yocum is actively participating in
resident training in Hand Surgery.
His areas of special interest include congenital deformities,
rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral nerve entrapments, such as carpal
tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, radial tunnel syndrome and
cumulative trauma disorder.
